Site Cuts, House Site Preparation & Driveway Excavation - East Coast and North East Tasmania
Getting the ground preparation right at the start of a build or driveway project sets up every trade and every stage that follows. A site cut that's slightly out holds up the building crew and the concreters. Slab preparation that isn't level or properly compacted creates problems that show up in the finished floor. A driveway dig-out that doesn't remove unsuitable material and replace it with properly compacted road base produces a driveway that fails within a few years - costing significantly more to fix than it would have to prepare correctly the first time.
North East Excavations carries out house site preparation, site cuts, slab preparation, excavation and grading, driveway dig-outs, and access road and driveway preparation for homeowners, owner-builders, and residential builders across St Helens, Scamander, Binalong Bay, St Marys, Fingal, Scottsdale, Derby, and the broader East Coast and North East Tasmania. Our operators are trained, experienced in East Coast ground conditions, and understand what accurate, clean preparation looks like for the trades that follow.
Site Cuts for New Builds
House site preparation is the foundation of any new build - the excavation and grading work that creates a level, stable building platform before construction begins. Done accurately, it sets the entire build up for success. Done poorly, it creates problems that cost more to fix than the site preparation saved.
New Homes
Site cuts and excavation and grading for new home construction across the East Coast and North East Tasmania. House site preparation for new homes in St Helens, Scamander, and Binalong Bay often involves sloping coastal blocks where cut-and-fill management is part of every job. For new home builds further inland around St Marys, Fingal, and Scottsdale, varying ground conditions - rocky ground, heavy clay, soft fill - require experienced operators who know how to read the site and prepare it correctly.
We work from your building plans and coordinate directly with your builder and concreters on levels, setout, and timing. For owner-builders working through the process for the first time, we'll explain what we need to know to carry out the house site preparation correctly.
Extensions & Additions
Site preparation for extensions and additions to existing homes where working close to the existing structure requires care and precision. Our Komatsu PC78MR zero tail-swing excavator handles confined house site preparation without risk to the existing building or surrounds.
Slab Preparation
Slab preparation for concrete slabs, footings, and building pads across the East Coast and North East. Slab preparation involves more than removing topsoil - it requires excavation to the correct depth, removal of unsuitable material, and a prepared, compacted surface that concreters can work from with confidence. We supply road base for the sub-base layer through St Helens Quarries in the same job where required.
Garages, Sheds & Outbuildings
Site preparation for garages, sheds, workshops, and outbuildings on residential and rural properties around Fingal, Derby, and Scottsdale. The same standard of house site preparation applies - accurate levels, clean formation, and a properly prepared surface ready for the slab crew.
Driveway Dig-Outs & Subgrade Preparation
Driveway dig-outs and preparation across the East Coast and North East Tasmania. A driveway that lasts starts at the subgrade - not the surface. We carry out full subgrade excavation to the required depth, remove topsoil and unsuitable material, grade and form the base, supply and place road base through St Helens Quarries, and compact with our Dynapac vibrating roller. The result is a properly prepared driveway base built to carry the loads placed on it over the long term.
We carry out driveway dig-outs and preparation across St Helens, Scamander, Binalong Bay, St Marys, Fingal, and the broader East Coast region. If you're building a new driveway and want it done properly from the ground up, call us.
Access Roads & Driveways
Access road and driveway construction across residential and rural properties throughout the East Coast and North East Tasmania. From a short residential driveway in St Helens to a longer rural access road near Scottsdale or Derby - we carry out the excavation and grading, road base supply, and compaction as a complete job. Access roads and driveways built on a properly prepared base perform reliably year after year, regardless of what the East Coast weather puts them through.
Compaction
Compaction is what turns placed road base into a structural surface. Without proper compaction, even well-specified road base will settle, shift, and deform under load. North East Excavations carries out compaction using our Dynapac vibrating compaction roller - ensuring road base, sub-bases, and prepared platforms across the East Coast and North East are compacted to the standard that delivers long-term performance.
Compaction is particularly important on driveway dig-out bases, slab preparation sub-bases, and access road construction where load-bearing performance matters from day one. It's not an optional step - it's what makes everything above it work.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
House site preparation is the excavation and earthmoving work carried out before construction begins - clearing vegetation, removing topsoil, cutting and filling to create a level building platform, and preparing the ground to the levels specified in your building plans. It's the first trade on site and the work that everything else is built from.
-
It depends on the slope of the land and the building design. On gently sloping ground a cut of a few hundred millimetres may be sufficient. On steeper blocks, cuts of a metre or more are common. Your building designer or engineer will specify the finished levels - we work from those plans and can advise on what the excavation and grading will involve once we've seen the site.
-
A residential driveway base across the East Coast is typically 150mm of compacted road base. For driveways that take regular truck or heavy vehicle access, 200mm provides better long-term performance. We'll advise based on your site conditions and use.
-
Yes. Through St Helens Quarries we supply VicRoads-compliant -20mm road base, -40mm for heavier applications, and budget road base for rural access roads and driveways - delivered to site and placed as part of the same job.
